Canada Visitor / Super Visa

Canada Visitor / Super Visa

Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) has reopened the Visitor/Super Visa program, specially helping parents and grandparents as Canadian Residents can now sponsor them without much difficulty.

The parents and grandparents of Canadian citizens and permanent citizens are allowed to apply for an extended visitor’s visa known as Super Visa to live with their family for a longer duration. The Super visa is generally valid for ten years, in which the candidate can stay for a maximum period of 2 years once a stay. It is a temporary visa and candidates are allowed to stay for a maximum of 2 years in a single visit. This visa is however applicable to a maximum of 10 years. The processing time of this Super Visa is approximately 8 weeks, and, the difference between a Visitor Visa and Super Visa is the status period of each, as in Super Visa candidate can stay up to 2 years and in visitor visa candidate can stay up to 6 to 8 months.

The applicant for a parent and grandparents super visa has to meet certain standards. The application for this visa is submitted to a visa office which can be in or outside of Canada.

The first step involves the applicant to qualify for the eligibility of a regular visitor visa. Apart from having good health and valid travel document, the applicant needs to satisfy a Canadian immigration official that they will leave the country at the end of their authorized stay. Applicants also need to show that they have sufficient ties to their home such as family, property or job and they should also have sufficient funds to be able to support themselves financially for the length of their stay with all the medical exams and health insurances.

Additionally, the individual applicant must:

  • Demonstrate and prove that they are the parent or grandparent of a Canadian citizen or permanent resident;
  • Get medical insurance from a Canadian insurance company that is well founded for one year, contributing a minimum coverage of $100,000 for health care, hospitalization, and repatriation;
  • Undergo a medical examination.

Finally, there are a few criterias that the applicant’s family member in Canada must follow, for example

  • They are required to prove that they are Canadian citizen or PR.
  • They should then most importantly send sponsorship papers known as the letter of Invitation which contains all the desired information including the schedule, financial needs and status, financial support and all the related personal information of the candidate visiting Canada. With the following applications, documentations regarding the income must also be required.

Parents and grandparents having a Super visa have the rights and restrictions of a regular tourist visa holder as they are not allowed to work or study while their stay in Canada.
